MERCY TRIUMPHS and SO WILL JUSTICE

MERCY TRIUMPHS & SO WILL JUSTICE | HE TREADS THE WINEPRESS ALONE Meditation on Revelations 19 and Isaiah 63

This painting has been over a year in the making. It felt urgent at every step of the way and that hasn’t changed in the slightest even as I post this today. Honestly it’s been like a “painting Bible study” the whole time I have been working on this.

I don’t fully understand it all yet, and I know that is okay. But urgently I’m listening and learning to grapple with each verse and passage. It leads me over and over again to surrender. He requires that I take Him at His word. He has begun to connect things and I’m grateful. He is more brilliant than ever.

My thoughts about Depictions of Christ in my Art:

I don’t typically make it my goal to fully depict Christ in a painting. Our references are only made from art history and as beautiful and helpful as it has been to inspire faith and connect us with the story of God it must always be understood as only a pursuit and an avenue for seeing Him truly. Within my art practice, while I use self portraiture, themes take double meanings as if it is about myself and ultimately about a reflection of Christ found in that.

This is one of the very rare pieces that I set out to actually create a depiction of Christ. It was an invitation to seek and find Him in a new way, in a setting I had not seen Him depicted as the way I was wrestling to understand Him.
